About the Social Event

Kicking off the event will be the Poster Session, where presenters will showcase their
posters and detail their research on varying topics related to librarianship in Hawaiʻi.
HLA Recognition Award recipients will be honored during the event.
There will be live music for a portion of the event.

Lawn Games - Starting at 4pm

We will have lawn games (e.g. giant jenga and connect-4, cornhole) to foster a sense of celebration and unity. This is a family friendly event! However, if you bring anyone under 18, please remember that you are responsible for monitoring them at all times during the event.

The lawn area of Kaʻiwakīloumoku is named Kūkulu O Kahiki. Designed for outdoor
gatherings, Kūkulu O Kahiki refers to the distant borders of the ancestral homelands from which Hawaiians trace their Polynesian origins. The metaphor of pillars holding up the heavenly expanse from the corners of the Oceanic universe reflects an ocean-going, island-oriented people who are keenly aware of their environment and their place within it.

Storytelling: A Promise for the Future

Folktales transcend cultural barriers and reveal universals about the Human condition. As librarians we are obligated to share stories, not only tales from our own cultural comfort zone, but stories from around the world. Robert Bly once said: “fairy stories, legends, myths, hearth stories—amount to a reservoir where we keep new ways of responding that we can adopt when the conventional and current ways wear out.” And Sue Kidd Monk, author of The Secret Life of Bees said, “Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here.”  Sharing an evening of stories from around the world.
